WisGateOS 2 Development Update – Q4 2024 & Q1 2025

Continuing to Elevate WisGateOS 2

At RAKwireless, we take great pride in continuously enhancing WisGateOS 2. We do this to ensure that our flagship Edge/Soho gateways operate at peak performance with ever-improving features, stability, and usability. Over the past two quarters, our development team has been hard at work delivering meaningful updates, refining core functionalities, and resolving key issues to enhance user experience.

WisGateOS 2 v2.2.11 – February 14, 2025

With this update, we've introduced several critical features that improve usability, monitoring, and connectivity, making Edge and Soho gateways even more powerful and reliable.

New Features and Enhancements:

Among the major updates, we have introduced SD card monitoring, allowing users to track the health and presence of their SD cards directly from the WebUI. The system now also supports automatic SD card formatting and mounting, simplifying storage setup in case of failure. Reset event logging has been enhanced for better troubleshooting, and the Basics Station forwarder now includes a connection monitor for improved network reliability. Additionally, Wi-Fi channel settings have been adjusted to align with country selection for optimal compliance and performance.

Several key bugs have been addressed, including resolving WisDM agent connection issues, correcting BSSID parsing between WisGateOS 2 and WisDM, and fixing LoRa band switching inconsistencies. Other stability improvements include preventing modem reset loops, fixing display issues in channel usage graphs, and improving MQTT and WebUI functionality.

WisGateOS 2 v2.2.10 – November 5, 2024

This release focused on strengthening connectivity and adding valuable pre-configuration capabilities.

New functionalities include the ability to retain Basics Station pre-configurations after a factory reset, ensuring that users can easily recover their previous settings without the need for manual reconfiguration. Support for Cat-1 LTE has been added for RAK7267 WisGate Soho Pro Gateway, improving cellular connectivity, while GPS data can now be exported to a local host. Additionally, the default forwarder URL has been updated to TTN for streamlined network compatibility to help quick and easy start for POC cases.

This version also addressed critical WisDM agent stability issues, corrected LoRa usage data reporting, and resolved an issue preventing extender gateways from being added to Built-In NS mode. Improvements were made to UI graphs displaying LoRa uplinks and downlinks, ensuring accurate time-based representations of network activity.

New Extensions: Operation & Maintenance, Field Test, and Failover Reboot

In addition to these updates, we have developed new extensions that further enhance LoRaWAN gateway operation, reliability, and network management. The Operation and Maintenance extension introduces scheduled reboot capabilities and network status monitoring. This ensures that if a 4G connection is lost, the system can proactively restart the cellular module to restore connectivity with minimal downtime.

The Field Test extension provides backend computing support for RAK field tester devices, enabling seamless communication with LoRaWAN® network servers via MQTT. This feature allows users to measure and analyze network performance in real time, assisting with optimization efforts.

To further improve resilience, the Failover Reboot extension continuously monitors all network links, including LTE, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. If a complete network outage is detected, the system attempts to restore connectivity by rebooting the LTE module or the gateway itself, reducing the need for manual intervention and ensuring reliable operations in remote deployments.

These extensions are available for installation through the WisGateOS 2 Extension Gallery.

A Strong Foundation for 2025

These past two quarters have been filled with significant improvements that enhance the performance, stability, and usability of WisGateOS 2. Our team remains dedicated to refining and expanding the capabilities of WisGateOS 2, ensuring that Edge/Soho users continue to experience the best in LoRaWAN gateway performance.

We’re excited for what’s ahead. Stay tuned for more updates!

Thank you for your continued support and feedback. Your input helps shape the future of WisGateOS 2!
